The Cape Cod Art Association’s Artist in Residence Program is open to all visual artists who are working on a full-time career as artists. Preference is given for geographic diversity. Applicants must be at least 21 years of age.
Long before Charles Webster Hawthorne founded the Cape Cod School of Art in 1899, artists have flocked to the Cape, attracted by the light, the ocean and the ever changing atmosphere which can transform from foggy luminescence to dazzling sunlight in a few hours. Edward Hopper and Henry Hensche are just two of many artists who have made Cape Cod famous for visual arts. Artists now populate the area year-round and have established some of the most famous galleries, playhouses, studios and art education programs in the country.
is a juried artist organization, located in Barnstable, with a membership of nearly 1000 artists, students and those who appreciate art. Established in 1948, it is devoted "…to promoting the appreciation, education, exhibition, sale, and distribution of the visual arts on Cape Cod and to foster an understanding relationship between workers in these arts and the public".
Artists have had a long and positive impact on the appreciation and preservation of wild places that surround us. Painting the dynamic landscapes where people, land and sea meet, artists have stimulated people to care about these unique environments and communities that survive here. The Artist-in-Residence Program offers visual artists the opportunity to pursue their art while being surrounded by the inspiring people, architecture and landscape of the area.
The Cape Cod Art Association makes it possible for artists to come and paint for two weeks in this seashore artists’ haven, living with a host family and being surrounded by artists. No stipend is provided.
Cape Cod is home to many nationally recognized artists. This residency will provide ample time for independent painting augmented by critique sessions with two nationally known artists and a prominent gallery owner.
Host families will provide accommodations and continental breakfasts while the art association will arrange several group dinners at the homes of volunteers from its membership. The residency will conclude with an exhibition and sale of wet works to which board members, collectors and other well-known Cape artists will be invited.
Participating artists are asked to donate to the Association an original piece of work representative of their two-week stay on Cape Cod. Art work should be framed and prepared for hanging before donation. The artwork will be exhibited at the final event and be for sale.
Each artist is responsible for all travel, artist materials, lunches and some dinners during their stay on Cape Cod.
